The DJI Osmo Action 6 is the first action cam with variable aperture

DJI is pushing at the limits of tiny cameras with the Osmo Action 6, its latest take on a compact action cam.

The standout change is a variable aperture, making it the first action cam that lets you choose between f/2.0 for more light or stop down to f/4.0. Paired with a new 1-over-1.1-inch square sensor and fused 2.4 micrometer pixels, DJI is aiming for cleaner low light, richer highlights, and a claimed 13.5 stops of dynamic range.

That larger sensor unlocks a new way to frame your shots. The 4K Custom mode lets you shoot once and crop for vertical or horizontal later, so you do not have to twist the camera to fit every platform.

You also get 4K at up to 120 frames per second in a 4 to 3 ratio, a SuperNight option that keeps detail up to 4K at 60, and 10-bit D-Log M with an on-screen preview to judge colour and exposure while you record.

Creative control goes beyond exposure, with a Macro Lens accessory that cuts the minimum focus distance from 35 cm to 11 cm for crisp close-ups of food, pets, and small scenes. A separate FOV Boost Lens widens the native 155-degree view to a sweeping 182 degrees for more immersive point-of-view shots. Stabilisation is covered by RockSteady 3.0 and 3.0 Plus, HorizonBalancing to keep tilt in check within 45 degrees, and HorizonSteady that locks the horizon through a full roll while holding 4K at 60.

Image shaping tools are part of the story as well, and that starts with zoom topping out at 2x without quality loss in 4K and a Natural Wide FOV option that helps reduce vertical stretch. Film Tone offers six looks, while Portrait Mode, plus Subject Centering and Tracking work to keep faces exposed well and neatly framed.

Its body is built for real trips, with waterproofing to 20 meters without a case and to 60 meters with one. It also runs in the cold down to minus 20 degrees Celsius.

On top of that, you get a colour temperature sensor for truer underwater tones and a pressure gauge for dive data.

Battery life is quoted at up to four hours, with fast charging to 80% in about 22 minutes, and there is 50GB of internal storage for insurance when you forget a card.

Audio and controls get some considerate upgrades too, letting you pair up to two DJI Mic transmitters directly or rely on the built-in three-mic array with wind noise reduction. Gesture control and smarter subject tracking really define the experience, so it still feels like an action cam, just with more of the tools you would expect on a bigger rig.
