Fitbit redesign brings Material 3 Expressive overhaul

Besides the AI-powered coach, the Fitbit redesign introduces Material 3 Expressive to the Android app.

Fitbit switches to a shorter bottom bar with this redesign. From any of the four tabs, pull down to sync your Pixel Watch or Fitbit device. This triggers a contained loading indicator that cycles through the new M3E shapes. After letting go, “fitbit premium” disappears from the app bar and you get a linear progress indicator.

Material 3 Expressive shapes are also used to house a checkmark when you’ve completed a goal.

All metric views make use of a floating toolbar with FAB to switch between different time periods. For stats like Steps and Sleep, it’s D(ay), W(eek), M(onth), 3M(onths), and Y(ear). Others spell it out: Week, Month, 3 Months, and Year.

Each pill-shaped bar is accompanied by a floating action button to launch the personal health coach.

The Today, Fitness, and Sleep feeds have a sheet motif. Key stats at the top exist on a background layer that theme the status and app bars, while cards appear on a sheet that take over the entire screen as you scroll. It’s teal for Fitness and purple for Sleep.

Otherwise, the app continues to lack Dynamic Color, with the bottom bar, toolbar, and FAB making use of the default blue accent color.

The other big Material 3 Expressive aspect in Fitbit is a lot of “fluid and natural motion,” like when going from a stat page back to the main tabs. On initial app launch, charts load in from left-to-right.

I think Fitbit is Google’s most comprehensive Material 3 Expressive redesign to date because of this motion. There’s certainly more M3E than the new Google Home app.

This Fitbit redesign, along with the AI-powered coach, is launching next year. At the moment, this public preview is just available in the US.
