After a lengthy wait, Google has started rolling out Gemini access on Android Auto through the latest updates.

Gemini for Android Auto was first promised in May of this year, but we’ve been waiting what feels like forever for the Assistant replacement to arrive. Now, it’s finally here, at least for some users.

Over the past 24 hours, Google has quietly started the rollout of Gemini for Android Auto, seemingly starting with beta users. The change is server-side, with multiple users reporting that Gemini has gone live in the car. One user mentions that they noticed this on Android Auto 15.6, and we’re seeing the same on our Pixel 10 Pro XL connected to different car displays, and also on a Galaxy Z Fold 7 running Android Auto 15.7. It’s unclear if this particular version is what delivers support, but that seems unlikely seeing as this very started rolling out last week. Android Auto 15.6 and 15.7 are currently only available in beta, so it’s also unclear at this time if the rollout is tied to the Android Auto beta or simply showing up on that version as a coincidence.

Gemini for Android Auto replaces Google Assistant entirely, with the new voice assistant able to better understand natural language commands as well as tie into Gemini’s connected apps and extensions for services like Google Home, Keep, and Maps.

We haven’t been able to test Gemini for Android Auto in-depth just yet, but it functions exactly as you’d expect, and retains support for the “Hey Google” hotword in the car too. Gemini Live can be access with the command “let’s talk live,” at which point the media widget on the dashboard is replaced with a Live widget.

Google says that Gemini on Android Auto will also be able to automatically translate text messages, both incoming and outgoing. One feature lost between Assistant and Gemini, though, is the ability to use nicknames for contacts.

New Gemini settings in the Settings menu allow you to toggle on/off “Interrupt Live responses” and “Share precise location,” both of which are enabled by default.

Notably, this rollout is beginning just a day after Google announced new Gemini features for Google Maps.

As mentioned, it’s unclear if this is a wide rollout for all Android Auto users or just those in the beta program. If you’re seeing Gemini in your car, let us know what app version you’re using in the comments below.
