Xiaomi brings back a fan-favorite feature with HyperOS 3 update!

Sometimes the best updates aren’t flashy new tools but familiar ones that quietly return. Xiaomi’s latest HyperOS 3 rollout brings back the small yet loved “Read” button on SMS notifications — a simple tap that marks a message as read without opening the app. It’s the kind of detail you only miss when it’s gone.

A small fix that feels bigger than it looks

When MIUI evolved into HyperOS, this little shortcut vanished. Most people didn’t notice right away — until they had to open the Messages app just to clear an OTP or promo text. Then the complaints started rolling in.

Xiaomi seems to have taken that feedback seriously. A product manager confirmed on social media that the “Read” button is returning gradually across devices. It’s one of those quality-of-life touches that make daily use smoother, especially for heavy texters.

Truth is, these micro-updates often matter more than headline features. They save seconds, but they make the phone feel more natural again.

    The update rollout has begun

The feature arrives with the newest HyperOS 3 build, first spotted on devices such as the Xiaomi MIX Flip and Redmi K70 series. The rollout started on October 28 and will continue in waves worldwide.

Xiaomi says the staged release helps avoid performance hiccups, which makes sense — HyperOS 3 has plenty running under the hood. If you don’t see it yet, be patient and it will appear.

Part of a wider push for simplicity

What’s interesting about HyperOS 3 is that it doesn’t try to reinvent anything. Instead, Xiaomi is polishing what already works. Animations are cleaner, app switching feels faster, and battery control is less aggressive than before.

This shift signals maturity. Xiaomi doesn’t need to keep chasing visual overhauls; it just needs to listen. Bringing back the “Read” button fits that mindset perfectly — fewer gimmicks, more everyday usefulness.

And honestly, that’s refreshing. Most users want reliability, not another design experiment.

    Why it matters

Xiaomi’s return to practical updates shows a company growing more responsive to its global community. The “Read” shortcut might sound tiny, but it reflects a much larger pattern: user voices shaping software design.

It’s not about nostalgia; it’s about usability. When a phone works exactly how you expect, you notice it less — and that’s the point.
