What is AGI? We know it stands for Artificial General Intelligence. That’s a good start. But what does AGI mean, really? And how do we know when we’ve achieved it? For that matter, who decides we’ve achieved it? Does the AGI decide?

This week, as OpenAI completed a long restructuring process that sets it up to be even more valuable, the company has also re-done its deal with Microsoft about when AGI happens, who decides, and what happens next. For years, the creation of AGI has been looked at as sort of a singularity moment; now it feels like it’ll just be a Tuesday.

On this episode of The Vergecast, David and Nilay talk through all of the OpenAI news, with a special focus on what it all means for Digital Jesus. Sorry, I mean AGI. But before they do, the hosts talk about all the other AI news of the week, including all the announcements from Adobe Max, which range from a series of extremely cool and powerful creative tools to a bunch of new slop machines designed to flood social platforms with AI garbage. You can sort of tell the whole AI story just by talking about Adobe apps, and we try and do so. We also talk about Meta, YouTube, and other platforms increasing their focus on AI content, and what it might mean for the creator economy.

After that, it’s OpenAI time. If you haven’t read the press release announcing the company’s new deal with Microsoft, you’re in for a treat. This is almost certainly the most press release we’ve ever read on The Vergecast, but there’s a lot to go through, and a lot of questions about whether anyone actually believes the story.

Finally, in the lightning round, we talk about Brendan Carr (who is a dummy), Cybertruck recalls, the mysterious missing Trump Phone, Ghost Posts, and more.

If you want to know more about everything we discuss in this episode, here are some links to get you started, beginning with Adobe and AI content:
