GitHub Says India Will Soon Lead the World in Software Developers

GitHub’s new Octoverse 2025 report shows a major shift coming in the tech
world. It is expected that by 2030, India will have more software developers
than the United States, who are the current worldwide leaders.

    India’s Fast
    Rise

India is quickly catching up with
the U.S, which has about 28 million developers. GitHub predicts the country
will add more than 35 million new
developers in the next few years. It will reach around 57.5 million by 2030. The U.S., by
comparison, is expected to reach about 54.7
    million.

    GitHub credits India’s fast growth
to strong government training programs. AI tools that support local
languages also make coding more accessible to people.

    Similar growth is
    happening across the Asia-Pacific
region. In this region, more young people are getting into tech than ever before.

    A
    Global Trend

    Brazil’s
    developer community is set to
jump from 6.9 million to 19.6 million
by 2030. This will make it the third largest in the world. China is also on track to hit 17.7 million developers within the same period.

Behind this global boom is AI. Generative AI
is changing how developers work and what they build. According to GitHub, TypeScript passed Python in August to
    become the most popular programming
    language.

    TypeScript
is becoming hugely popular with developers. Over the last year, the number of
people using it shot up by 66%.
It now has over a million users. That puts it
ahead of other languages. Next up is Python
    with about 850,000 users.

    JavaScript is
in third place with roughly 427,000 users. This jump shows that developers are
choosing TypeScript more often. They like
that it’s more stable and that it also works better with new coding tools
    powered by AI.

    AI Tools Are Now Everywhere

    In just two
years, the number of AI projects on GitHub
has doubled. There are now about 4.3
million of these projects. This means AI coding is not just for experts
    anymore.

It’s become totally normal for new users to rely on these tools.
Around 80% of new people turn on Copilot in their first week. That
really tells you how common AI tools have become in the world of programming.

    Right now, over 1.13 million
public repositories are using generative AI SDKs,
    up 178%
from last year. Many of these projects are getting larger and more advanced,
showing that AI is moving beyond experiments and becoming part of real,
    everyday development work.

    What’s
    Next

GitHub also pointed out the growing
role of MCP (Model Context Protocol).
This could help developers follow common standards when building AI systems. Various
AI Tools like Ollama and Ragflow show how local AI and smarter workflows are
    becoming more common.

The message from GitHub that “AI isn’t replacing developers, it’s helping
them grow’’ is clear. The future is here, as developers partner with AI
to reshape the world of technology.
